If On a Rainy Night a Family

The bitter night lingers for the restless. An invitation from the Montelli family pulls you into its past, where new and old, balance and change collide. In the freest place of Ragunna, the host of the invitation awaits your arrival.

At midnight, you arrive at Liberty Square, responding to an invitation from Carlotta's uncle, Capollo. Though the invitation seems genuine, you remain wary of his true intentions. You and Abby suspect he has ulterior motives beyond mere gratitude.
Player:
"The midnight chime has faded, yet the night endures. Restless hearts long for an understanding that should be ours."
Player:
"In the freest place of Ragunna, I await your arrival..." This should be the place Capollo mentioned in his invitation.
Invitation Letter:
"With this invitation, I wish to personally thank you for all you have done for the Montelli family and to amend the slight misstep in your reception. I hope this gesture will help to mend any misunderstandings and strengthen our alliance."
Invitation Letter:
"In the name of the Montellis, I shall honor my allies as I do my own kin and blood."
Invitation Letter:
"In the freest place of Ragunna, I await your arrival... Yours sincerely, Capollo Montelli."
Abby:
I knew it, another invitation. That's kind of their signature, huh? But this wasn't Carlotta, who's this Capollo guy?
He's the uncle Carlotta told us about.
He's the owner of that pendant.
Abby:
Oh, yeah. The big boss of the vault and all that jazz? Guess it won't hurt swinging by Carlotta's family. They do owe us a big one!
Abby:
I bet he's got something good planned. A pile of money? Maybe a mega feast?
Abby:
Ugh... hic! I've been feeling pretty weird lately, my head's all wobbly. I might not be able to show right when you need me!
Just get some rest, I can manage.
I'll make sure to eat all the food for you.
Abby:
Okay, you've got this. If anything happens, just smash your way through!
Abby:
Anyway, I'll leave this to you then. But hey, if you ever need my help, just give me a shout, okay?
Player:
Hm, to locate me so precisely and deliver the invitation right into my hands... this Capollo Montelli knows what he's doing.

Go to the Liberty Square in midnight (22:00-02:00)
Standing before you is Capollo, Carlotta's uncle, son of the Padrino, and the next head of the Montelli family. While expressing gratitude for your cooperation, he warns that your deep involvement may destabilize the family's delicate balance and disrupt future plans. Capollo offers to take Carlotta's place as the family's representative in your alliance but makes it clear that, if you decline, you should avoid meddling further in Montelli affairs. As the tension escalates, Carlotta intervenes, leaving you a cryptic message, "Meet me at the rendezvous. Beware the eyes." Seeing you off, she brings up the recent betrayal involving Benett, the family's vault manager, who was caught stealing from the vault.
???:
Forgive me for not meeting you properly until now.
???:
Guest from the Black Shores, Laureate of the Carnevale, savior and friend of the Montellis... Player, your presence is an honor.
Capollo:
Allow me to formally introduce myself. I am Capollo Montelli, Carlotta's uncle, son of the Padrino, and the next head of the family.
Player:
(Given Capollo's stature, a private meeting at this hour... is it really just about gratitude?)
Why the sudden invite from someone of your rank?
I hope this meeting is as simple as it seems.
Capollo:
Without you, the traitors wouldn't have been captured, and I freed from their hands.
Capollo:
While Carlotta has expressed our family's gratitude, I feel obliged to do it in person.
Capollo:
But unfortunately, the traitors had little to offer, and the one behind them is still in the shadows. Unnerving, isn't it?
Don't worry, Carlotta is on it.
I heard it's someone high up in the family.
Sorry, your family issues aren't my concern.
Capollo:
I'll wait for her findings then.
Capollo:
Things aren't as bright for the Montellis as they may seem. The Order, Fisalias, and the Fractsidus... Any attempt to break the status quo puts us at risk.
Capollo:
The traitors we captured were a warning, but also a reminder—to survive, I must seek alliances beyond the family.
Capollo:
Especially with you, just as Carlotta did.
You or Carlotta, what's the difference?
Thought I was already an ally to the entire family.
Capollo:
Now that you mention it, let me be clear.
Capollo:
Carlotta is dear to me, and nothing will change that.
Capollo:
But she's from the lesser branch of the family. Tradition says I, the rightful heir, should manage dealings with the Black Shores, not her.
Capollo:
Restoring order and benefiting the family as I intended... that's what I meant in the letter by amending a slight misstep.
Capollo:
The leader of the Black Shores must have sent you here with a purpose. Tell me, and I will offer you support far beyond what Carlotta could provide.
I can't give you an answer now.
Support with a high price, I suppose.
Capollo:
The choice is yours, of course... But as the family heir, I will not see my authority undermined, even by those I consider allies.
Capollo:
So if you can't stand by my side, I'd prefer you stay out of the Montellis' affairs.
Capollo:
Otherwise... believe me, you won't want to find yourself at odds with us, no matter how strong you are.
Capollo:
You're welcome to remain an observer from the sidelines. But once you join the table, you play by the rules—my rules.
???:
Well said. But the rules are not set in stone, are they?
Carlotta:
What matter of intrigue brought you and Player together at this hour, Uncle? A table... are we speaking of a splendid card game, then?
Capollo:
Your timing is most unfortunate. Our little chat just finished.
Carlotta:
Pity. I didn't think you'd pull {Male=him;Female=her} aside for a private word, especially after all Rover and I have been through together.
Carlotta:
But since you've finished, would you excuse us now?
Capollo:
Carlotta, you stay. I have more to discuss with you.
Carlotta:
Meet me at the rendezvous. Beware the "eyes."
Capollo:
A gun is a powerful tool, but only in the hands of the worthy.
Carlotta:
I understand, Uncle. I've never forgotten where my privileges come from, nor will I covet what's not mine.
Carlotta:
The Black Shores, the Carnevale... my sole principle is whether they benefit the Montellis.
Carlotta:
I will execute any command that strengthens the family, and crush any threats to our standing.
Capollo:
...Very well. Keep your words in mind.
Carlotta:
Uncle, about Benett... have you heard?
Capollo:
That family thief stealing from the vault? Why, are you suggesting I failed my duties?
Carlotta:
Not at all, I just happened to overhear someone talking about it in passing...

Player:
(Carlotta warned me about eyes... So she probably wants me to avoid unnecessary attention.)
Player:
(Not sure why, but staying under the radar is never a bad idea.)

You arrive at the rendezvous before Carlotta and notice Montelli members, dressed in the family's attire, quietly departing one by one. Left behind is an elderly man who is appreciating a painting. When you approach, he reveals himself as an art-loving investor, simply waiting for the rain to stop. He explains that now is not the time to cling to the existing balance, but to embrace the unknown and seek change... You feel there is a deeper meaning behind his thoughts on the painting.
Player:
(Carlotta's not here yet. Guess I'll have to wait.)
(Whoever was following me seems to have left.)
(Is he one of them?)
(There's something distinctive about his attire and demeanor...)
Old Gentleman:
Might I trouble you for a light, young {Male=man;Female=lady}?
Sorry, I don't have one.
Old Gentleman:
Ah well, a cigar without smoke... My granddaughter told me Ragunna's rain is a bad omen. Can't argue with that now, can I?
(Is he here by accident or design?)
(I can sound him out a bit.)
Player:
You've been looking at this painting for a while. Anything special about it?
Old Gentleman:
Oh, did it capture your interest as well? Or are you simply passing the time until the rain ends?
Just happened to see you studying the painting.
You could say I'm waiting.
Old Gentleman:
Haha, it's only the investor's nature in me. I find myself irresistibly drawn to items of unique value.
(So he's an art investor...)
Old Gentleman:
The Montelli family prides themselves on their eclectic taste in art. Any style by any artist can find its home within their quarter.
Old Gentleman:
Art knows no boundaries of time, place, or the mind. Here we stand, united by the rain, drawn to the same painting.
Old Gentleman:
They say in art, we glimpse pieces of our own soul.
Old Gentleman:
What do you make of this piece? Care to share your thoughts?
You step closer to study the collage.
Small, irregular shapes nest within larger circles, their edges melding together to form a delicate harmony.
This balance, however, feels precarious, as if two opposing forces are on the verge of collision.
The large circle completes itself by absorbing the small pieces.
It's too abstract for me.
Maybe the artist is seeking some kind of change.
Old Gentleman:
You have keener eyes than I expected. Seeing essence beneath the surface.
Old Gentleman:
I share the same view, except that I'm somehow saddened by the part that forsakes its character to achieve balance.
Old Gentleman:
...Perhaps chosen by the artist for its uniqueness.
Old Gentleman:
Now is not the time to cling to the existing balance, but to embrace the unknown, seek change, and carve out one's path... just as she once did.
Seek change? You mean this painting?

When the rain stops, the elderly man quietly leaves the scene. Freed from the watchful eyes, Carlotta successfully meets with you. She apologizes for Capollo's rudeness and confesses that she has no interest in becoming the family head. Her true concern lies with the traitors lurking within the family. She reveals that Benett, the trusted vault manager, was caught embezzling and subsequently killed by Tacet Discords outside the city. However, on the night of his death, Carlotta received a cryptic message from him. Once again, Carlotta asks for your help to uncover the truth as you are an outsider that once aided her in capturing the initial traitors. To avoid alarming your targets, she offers you a new identity: Cat's Eye, a provisional member under her patronage. Believing that Benett's death holds key to unraveling the truth, you decide to investigate his residence.
As the rain finally ceases, the elderly man who had been admiring the painting quietly departs, leaving you alone to contemplate the painting's deeper meaning.
Carlotta:
"Glory in Decay," the impressionist Pasoli's latest piece... Didn't know you had such refined taste.
I was discussing it with an old gentleman.
He left soon after the rain stopped.
Carlotta:
I dodged those pesky "eyes" the whole way here, worried you'd been kept waiting too long. But it seems you've kept yourself entertained.
Carlotta:
So the old gentleman was simply hiding from the rain, was he? I see... The Montelli Quarter does attract art enthusiasts. Anyway, I'm glad prying eyes didn't follow.
Carlotta:
When it rains in Ragunna, surprises are as common as puddles. A delay is only a small splash.
Carlotta:
Calling you here with little explanation and a word of caution... I can only imagine your confusion.
It's taken me by surprise.
You and your uncle both...
The Montellis enjoy their intrigue, don't they?
Carlotta:
The shark in our midst has finally made its move.
Carlotta:
Recently, several of our partners claimed to have found a superior seller and ended their dealings with us.
Carlotta:
Meanwhile, Benett, our vault keeper, was reported to have embezzled and sold vault assets. It's said that he tried to flee but was killed by Tacet Discords outside the city.
So Benett betrayed the family as well?
Carlotta:
I am not so sure... I've worked with Benett before. He was principled, bold but not reckless, not one to easily betray. And...
Carlotta:
The night he died, he sent a photo to my Terminal—a blood-stained page of an anthology, marked with three phrases. "Thy eyes guide my course in the tempest," "When forty winters siege thy beauty," and "The planet turns right, twice and a half."
That's rather cryptic.
Okay, but... it makes no sense.
Carlotta:
The meaning is yet to be revealed, but he is clearly conveying a message.
Carlotta:
All evidence points to Benett being the key to uncovering the shark lurking in our waters.
Carlotta:
The Montelli family is a symbol of liberation for Ragunna. We uphold freedom and equality for all. Our vault is the heart of our family, and if it's corrupted, it threatens not only us, but risks plunging the city back into oppression and isolation.
Carlotta:
As much as I hate to suspect family members, I cannot rule any of them out.
Carlotta:
You, however, are different. As an outsider who has aided us in capturing the initial traitors... I hope to not be proven wrong, but I feel that I can trust you.
So you're asking for my help.
I suppose this is when I volunteer to help.
Carlotta:
My uncle's words were clear. Only those at the table can play the game. To engage with my family, one must have both standing and purpose.
Carlotta:
So, I offer you a new identity in our upcoming inquiry—Cat's Eye, a provisional member under my patronage.
But I'm not truly a member of the family.
This... is obviously a lie.
Carlotta:
If you wish to join, you must undertake the final assessment and pledge your loyalty to the Montellis.
Why Cat's Eye though?
Carlotta:
When it comes to family matters, we like to use codenames, each tied to a unique token. Mine, for example, is Opal.
Carlotta:
Opal recommended Cat's Eye. It has a ring to it, don't you think?
Carlotta:
Also, have you looked closely at your own eyes? They share the same luster as Cat's Eye gems.
Carlotta:
Now, Cat's Eye, will you stand with me to catch the traitor within our family and avert this looming threat?
Well, you recommended me, so it's your call.
We must prevent this threat and bring peace to Ragunna.
I want to uncover the true identity of this lurking shark.
Player:
I understand decorum is important to the Montellis. But among friends, can't we be a bit more... informal?
Carlotta:
What made you say that?
You're always one step ahead. How about we slow down and savor the present?
Carlotta:
Hmm, you're curious who I am beyond my role, is that it?
Carlotta:
Hmm, I just might entertain that thought.
Carlotta:
But for now, my agents just sent me the address of Benett's residence. While his body has been found, what he left behind is still out there.
Let's try our luck at his residence.

Outside Benett's residence, Capollo's subordinates, Sage and Acorn, are searching for the stolen items on his order, as Capollo is in charge of the vault. After some discussion, you and Carlotta decide to split up: she sneaks in through the back, while you confront them for information.
Carlotta:
It seems someone has acted faster. Those two... They're my uncle's agents, Sage and Acorn.
Codenames?
Those are not real names.
Carlotta:
Yes, we address each other by codenames—handy identifiers in a crowd.
Carlotta:
I'll keep you updated on the family members' codenames we encounter, along with any other details you might need.
Carlotta:
Seems like they are looking for something as well.
Carlotta:
It's only natural my uncle wishes to retrieve the lost items... but my presence might raise a few eyebrows.
I'll go have a little chat with them to see what they know.
You can find a way around them and continue the investigation.
Carlotta:
Yes, you try and loosen their lips. If memory serves, they are senior members, having served under my uncle for years. Regulars at Margherita's.
Carlotta:
Talk business with merchants, and wine with drinkers... Engage their interests, and their words will flow like a river. As for the rest...
I'll improvise as needed.

You successfully gather information from Sage and Acorn, learning they found nothing in Benett's residence. They express little hope of retrieving the stolen items as Capollo didn't allocate enough resources for investigation and they also believe that Benett had already sold the items off for quite some time.
Acorn, Sage...
Acorn:
Hey, that's you they're calling.
Sage:
No, that's both of us. But I don't recognize this person.
Acorn:
Neither do I. Listen up.
Acorn, Sage...
Sage:
Okay, you got the names right. Must be family. Who are you?
I'm Cat's Eye, new to the family.
I'm a Montelli.
Sage:
Cat's Eye? Doesn't ring a bell... Probably one of those new recruits after the Carnevale.
Acorn:
So, what do you need? We are just about to wrap up and grab a bite at Margherita's. Still got a lot on our plate today.
(Strike up a conversation about being a newcomer.)
(Strike up a conversation about Margherita's.)
Player:
Say, I've heard whispers of your skills. Seeing you here, it's clear you're on an important mission, aren't you?
Player:
I haven't faced a true challenge since I got here. Would you accept my help? I'm sure I'd learn a thing or two.
Sage:
Easy, haha. We've just finished up. So, nothing more to help with.
Sage:
But here's something I can tell you. Someone tried to steal from the vault recently.
Did you recover the stolen goods?
Sage:
No, not yet. We've looked everywhere but found nothing.
Acorn:
To be honest, I doubt we'll ever find them. The thief has probably sold everything off by now, and we are short on manpower. That's a needle in a haystack if you ask me.
Isn't your boss worried?
Boss doesn't seem too worried... is there a plan B?
Acorn:
Well, our boss is the Padrino's son. He has his methods.
Acorn:
Our job is to follow orders, not to ask questions. Just do what we're told and do it well.
Sage:
That's right. If you spot anything unusual, keep an eye on it. Could be your big break. With a bit more time, I think you'll do just fine.
(That should do it.)
(Time to meet up with Carlotta.)

Sharing this information with Carlotta, you both notice some suspicious aspects: when Carlotta brought up Benett's betrayal, Capollo had remained calm, but the series of recent family troubles seem to be all linked to the vault he directly manages. If he is eager to secure his position as the next family head, he should have put more efforts in resolving these incidents. Besides, Benett was not a man who would be easily swayed by greed... While discussing these points, you notice an elderly man observing you from a distance. Realizing he is exposed, he immediately flees, and you pursue him.
You rendezvous with Carlotta after her investigation and share the information you gathered.
Carlotta:
So, they found nothing, but assumed Uncle wasn't concerned?
Carlotta:
That makes no sense. Everything that happened recently ties back to the vault. If Uncle wished to protect his position, he'd be quick to retrieve the items and resolve the situation.
Maybe he's hiding something.
Maybe he's in control all along.
Things don't add up.
Carlotta:
Curiously, Benett was last sighted in the vicinity of Liberty Square, where you met Uncle.
Carlotta:
Last night, I was investigating the area before I happened upon your private meeting.
That explains why you were there...
Carlotta:
But when I brought this up to him afterward, he didn't seem privy to any details.
Carlotta:
As for my search of Benett's home, nothing of note turned up, just as the two agents reported.
Carlotta:
I found no spoils, not even the faintest trace of them being stored or moved... Everything about his living space fits the profile of a typical junior vault employee.
Carlotta:
I've also asked around about Bennet after our previous collaboration. He was ambitious, but never greedy. I was even told he refused the bribe offered by a business associate during an operation.
Carlotta:
The Montelli family is ever generous with wealth and opportunities, welcoming all who aspire to make their mark in Ragunna. Mere profit would never make him betray us.
The family protects its members.
Members bring the family glory.
Carlotta:
For now, more evidence is required. The entire matter might need to be approached from a different angle...
Carlotta:
Shh, hold still... See that man over there, the one that looks like a gray dove?
Without making a movement, you follow Carlotta's line of sight. Not far away, a man, partially hidden, is frequently glancing in your direction. He seems to be observing you and Carlotta.
Noticing your gaze, he immediately starts running.
Carlotta:
After him, quick.

Go to Benett's residence in the Montelli Quarter
Carlotta identifies the man as Duncan, a former member of the family who had long left. Duncan attributes Benett's death to insatiable lust and ambition. He shares that like Carlotta, he experienced that "stormy night" and believes all those who inherit the Montelli name are doomed to lose everything. Carlotta respects Duncan's views, but she also sees through his inner conflict—though he wishes to sever ties with the Montelli family, he returned to Ragunna after hearing Benett's death. You confide in Duncan about your doubts regarding Benett's death and ask him to join your investigation as his friend. After some hesitation, Duncan agrees and provides you information about Scarlet Velvet and her possible connection to Benett as the recipient of the stolen items.
Carlotta:
Nowhere to run. Now it's time for a proper chat.
???:
Hah... These old, creaky bones of mine.
???:
Did I offend you? Or are you just chasing down every passing soul... Never thought the Montellis would grow so aggressive.
No running, no chasing.
Just a glance and you can tell we're Montellis?
Carlotta:
He had no choice but to run, to escape his past and sever any ties with the Montellis.
Carlotta:
Right, Old Duncan?
Duncan:
Ha, hahaha... I must admit, you have an annoyingly good memory.
Duncan:
It's remarkable that someone of your rank would remember a man such as myself.
Carlotta:
I will never forget that stormy night, nor any of the members who were caught in it.
Duncan:
Sadly, I've no desire to be remembered. To me, Montelli is only a name of the past.
Duncan:
There were moments of joy, but they cannot make up for my loss... now I only feel tired.
If that's true, why are you here?
You say one thing, but do another.
Player:
Why go back to what you claim to have left in the past? Unless there's something you can't ignore.
Carlotta:
You were standing across from Benett's doorway, and your clothes are still damp from the rain... You weren't simply passing by, you were watching. What were you looking for? Or should I ask, what did you hope to find?
Duncan:
I don't know.
Duncan:
To grieve for my last friend in the family? To blame him for being so reckless and greedy?
Duncan:
Or to figure out how this fool ended up in such a mess, hoping to find the lost items and settling his debts, so he may rest in peace?
Duncan:
I tried to persuade him to leave with me, but failed. In Ragunna's game, the Montelli family has only two options.
Duncan:
We either play to win, or are forced to leave with nothing.
Duncan:
Every Montelli has a chance at their desires, but what's the price... They stake everything they hold dear—family, love, faith, principles, and even their life.
Duncan:
Now... his ambition and greed have cost him everything.
But you can decide when to leave the table.
Is that why you left the family?
Carlotta:
Most people find acceptance easier than change, as change demands the bravery to face uncertainty. No great endeavor is without its perils.
Carlotta:
So yes, if the Montellis are to drive the change and push past current barriers, the path ahead will be anything but easy.
Carlotta:
The family exists to withstand what an individual cannot, and accomplish what might otherwise be unattainable.
Carlotta:
But within the family, each Montelli still enjoys the freedom of choice. Your leaving is a testiment to this, is it not?
Carlotta:
If you're willing, there is still much to be done for Benett. His Terminal, the alleged stolen goods... everything but his body remains missing.
Carlotta:
Given your familiarity, you might help us in locating these items...
Benett's death may not be as simple as it looks.
We were also looking for more clues in his home.
Duncan:
...In that case, you might want to speak to Scarlet Velvet.
Who is this Scarlet Velvet?
Duncan:
The leader of a network of commoners seeking freedom in Ragunna City. They had close ties with Benett. If he was really stealing, I'd wager they were complicit.
Duncan:
That said, with their recent fallout with the family, I can't guarantee you'll find them, let alone talk to them.
Carlotta:
We have little choice but to try.
Carlotta:
Now... let's go, Player. We're off to the most reliable source of information in Ragunna.

Carlotta explains that Scarlet Velvet and her group not only may be in contact with Benett but had recently severed ties with Montalli, ceasing all transactions with the family. Growing more suspicious, you decide to contact Scarlet Velvet. Following Ragunna's code, you and Carlotta use alcohol as a signal to find her contact.
Carlotta:
This is the place.
The best place for information... is a pub?
I don't think Scarlet Velvet would hide somewhere so public.
Carlotta:
In Ragunna's market, they say fortune seldom favors those who lack a taste for fine drinks.
Carlotta:
Among traders, there's a secret "code" in the way drinks are mixed.
Carlotta:
A base of bitter almond and mint, for instance, usually signals danger and death. But some have devised their own, more private codes.
So they send messages by what they order.
So it's not just a drink, it's a conversation.
Carlotta:
Yes. This area is essentially a neutral zone in the city. No affiliations, no restrictions.
Carlotta:
With the ongoing feud between Scarlet Velvet and the Montellis, finding her will be difficult. But I've heard they have eyes and ears here.
Carlotta:
So all that remains is to order the right drink, watch the crowd, and let their reactions lead us to Scarlet Velvet's contact.
Bartender:
Greetings, what will it be today?
Carlotta:
A Scarlet Velvet Ribbon, please.
Bartender:
Scarlet Velvet... An uncommon choice. Perhaps the one you seek is waiting just as patiently. May you both find what you've come for.

Joyous Man:
The wild desires, they swallow me like the roaring waves. Oh, how maddening is your tender love! I'd forsake all, just to be forever lost in your embrace...
Hello.
Joyous Man:
But is this amber drink... a deadly poison, or a healing tonic?
Excuse me...
Joyous Man:
No, leave me be! Don't bother me!
Joyous Man:
The void... the endless void has consumed me. I want no part in anything... Who are you, and who am I?
Joyous Man:
Montelli, Fisalia, the Order, the commoners—without these names, what sets us apart? But reality is cruel, and we have no refuge!
Seems like the alcohol has brought out his inner bard.
Is he just drunk or completely out of it...
For a moment, you sense a pair of eyes on you from where you picked up your drink. But as you turn to look, the feeling quickly fades away.
Carlotta:
Let's go. Clearly he's not the one we are looking for.

Voluble Woman:
Oh, there you are. I noticed you as soon as you walked in.
Care to join me for a drink?
So, will you take this drink?
Voluble Woman:
Don't get me wrong. I've only been here long enough to recognize that drink, but I'm not making any guarantees beyond that.
Voluble Woman:
Hmm, that swagger and flair... You're with the Montelli family, am I right?
Voluble Woman:
I know I'm not the one you came for, but don't dash off just yet. You don't know what I have up my sleeve, you know.
Voluble Woman:
How about you let me prove how reliable I can be for your family? Go on, test me.
Ask about Benett.
Ask about Scarlet Velvet.
Ask about Carlotta.
Tell me the most curious thing you've heard.
Voluble Woman:
Hmm, if you're talking about Benett Montelli, he's right at the heart of the family's latest drama. Word is, he has broken the family's oath.
Voluble Woman:
But one of his greatest moments was recovering a lost shipment with the family's young lady. Isn't life full of ironies?
For an instant, you feel a gaze from where you got your drink, but it vanishes as soon as you turn to look.
Carlotta:
Impressive. You've proved yourself capable.
Carlotta:
Three days from now, at this hour, return here and order a "Golden Ears Mambo." Watch for someone wearing a green tourmaline.

Obsessed Man:
Kirsch, whiskey... and cherry tomatoes? Does it mean revenge?
Obsessed Man:
Hmm, blood orange, gin... that drink you have there is quite rare. Would you mind telling me what it means?
You will know it when you need to.
It's a secret too terrifying to speak of...
Obsessed Man:
Ah, a riddle cloaked in mystery! You don't want to share, hm? Ha... Sorry... I am simply enthralled by symbols and codes.
What grand schemes occupy your time?
Obsessed Man:
Uh, I-I've been exploring how drinks might encode numerical values, through alcohol content or vintage, perhaps. But lately I'm starting to wonder if the drink itself even matters.
Carlotta:
The key to any language lies in the shared rules and agreements between both parties.
Carlotta:
With that in mind, the same drink, or even the same object, can be given countless meanings… much like how my people and I sometimes improvise codes with whatever's available.
For an instant, you feel a gaze from where you got your drink, but it vanishes as soon as you turn to look.
Carlotta:
Sounds like you've been at this "code" research for quite some time. Mind if I ask you a question?
Carlotta:
Do you know when the bartender started his shift today?
(Is Carlotta suspecting the bartender?)
Obsessed Man:
Let me see... I got here quite early, and he was here about the same time. Probably around eight o'clock in the morning?
Carlotta:
Thank you. That's all I needed.

Head to the "most reliable source of information"
You and Carlotta quickly deduce that the bartender is the contact for Scarlet Velvet. Though he may not understand all of the cryptic messages, nothing of importance escapes him. While the bartender is not optimistic about your meeting with Scarlet Velvet, he doesn't stop you as you followed the rules and found him. It also seems that he has heard of Carlotta's character from Benett. Therefore, he promises to arrange a meeting for you with Scarlet Velvet at Whisperwind Haven at dask.
Bartender:
Anything else I can get you? Or is there a problem with the drinks?
No, it's you we have a problem with.
No, we are here for you.
Carlotta:
As expected from a Scarlet Velvet informant, you are smart. In a place like this, a bartender is the perfect cover, the least noticeable but with the best view.
Carlotta:
You mix every drink and pass every "code." You might not understand all of them, but nothing of importance ever escapes you.
Carlotta:
So, this Scarlet Velvet Ribbon... is meant for you. Am I correct, sir?
Bartender:
Well, well... it finds its way back to me at last. A drink of trouble, I'd call it.
Bartender:
Contact has been made, and by the rules, a conversation should follow. But Scarlet Velvet has decided there will be no further dealings with the Montellis.
Bartender:
The partnership is broken, and whatever bond you had is all but gone. If you do meet up, Lady Carlotta, aren't you afraid things might turn ugly?
There's no need to fight when we can talk.
We're here to solve problems.
Carlotta:
It's rumored that Scarlet Velvet's decision to end our partnership has something to do with a vault keeper named Benett.
Bartender:
Surely you don't believe that nonsense?
Carlotta:
Then what is the truth? Benett was recently found dead in the wild... The dead are silent, but you are not. So let's talk.
Bartender:
Wait, Benett is dead?
So there was a connection after all.
Seems like the news hasn't reached you.
Bartender:
That complicates things, I'm afraid.
Bartender:
I'm not sure if trusting Montelli is a wise choice, but in memory of Benett... If you truly are as noble as he believed...
Bartender:
Go to Whisperwind Haven after dusk. I will inform Scarlet Velvet.

Cold Acolyte:
Terminals are divine artifacts from the Sentinel, brought to Rinascita by the first Primus.
Cold Acolyte:
What you possessed were nothing but privately made replicas, existing solely by the grace of the Primus. How dare you defy our cleansing of such blasphemy!
Scarlet Velvet:
We never stopped asking the Order for permission to wear the Terminals, but every single request is denied. You won't even tell us why!
Scarlet Velvet:
You've controlled the Terminal supply, and the family stopped trading with us... These are all we have left. Why should we hand them over?
Cold Acolyte:
I can sense your fervent desire for the artifacts and the blessings from the Sentinel... But whether you are worthy of the terminals is for the Order to decide.
Cold Acolyte:
If you willingly part with your wealth in devotion to the Order's divine cause, the door to forgiveness might still be open.
Cold Acolyte:
But should you persist in your defiance... we'll have to escort you to the Penitentiary for judgment.
People are quarreling there.
Carlotta:
The Order and the commoners... it must be Scarlet Velvet causing the stir.
Carlotta:
The Order's arrogance is known, but such blatant actions... Is it because we're far from the heart of the city?
Carlotta:
Let's first address their troubles, and then we'll have a proper talk.

Realizing that retrieving the Reserved Terminal is impossible, the Acolytes attempt to further sever the relationship between Scarlet Velvet and Montelli before departing. According to Scarlet Velvet, it is not her group that severed ties but Montelli themselves. The family revoked their rights to purchase Reserved Terminals and weapons, as well as their protection. This revelation surprises Carlotta, as it contradicts Montelli's philosophy of proactive expansion. She asserts her stance to resume trading and assure that Montelli, which once broke the monopoly, will never become a supporter of it. Regarding Benett, Scarlet Velvet denies the possibility of him stealing from the vault and reveals that Benett foresaw his own death, leaving something behind at the coast, hoping it would never come into handy.
Cold Acolyte:
Ah, the Montelli's second daughter and this year's Laureate. I suggest you tread carefully and avoid crossing the Order and the Sentinel, especially not for the sake of mere commoners.
Cold Acolyte:
Must I remind you again? Trading Reserved Terminals is a breach of the discipline.
I didn't see anyone trading Terminals here.
All I see is you taking what's rightfully theirs.
Scarlet Velvet:
We paid good money for these. If you're taking them, you owe us a refund.
Cold Acolyte:
Yet the very traders who took your money have seen the error of their ways and reported your dealings. They have sworn to repent for their illicit production and cease all trade with you.
(Illicit production, traders... Is he talking about the Montellis?)
Cold Acolyte:
How sad, Ms. Carlotta. Such loyalty to your family, only to be left in the dark. No one bothered to inform you, did they?
Carlotta:
Oh, please. My ties with the family are not so fragile as to be shaken by mere words.
Carlotta:
The fact that we are having this conversation at all means that you cannot ignore my status, wouldn't you agree?
Carlotta:
The Sentinel and the Primus have declared free trade as our undeniable right. Scarlet Velvet is always entitled to trade as they please, regardless of their previous partnerships.
Carlotta:
You preach the doctrine, yet fail to adhere to it yourself. If I were you, I'd be on my way to the Penitentiary. Willful transgression... is the worst blasphemy one can imagine.
Cold Acolyte:
Mark my words! The day Montelli is brought to its knees by the Order and Fisalia will be the day you beg for the Sentinel's mercy.
Cold Acolyte:
When that day comes, all shall be under the Order's control. And it will not be long in coming.
The Acolyte departs with his entourage. Scarlet Velvet signals the others to leave and assess the damages.
Scarlet Velvet:
Ernesto, the bartender, said you needed to see me.
Scarlet Velvet:
You may have just defended us, but you heard it—your family has left us in a mess. Frankly, I don't see the point in having this conversation.
Scarlet Velvet:
But since Ernesto said it's about Benett, I'll give you a minute, for his sake. Speak quickly.
What you heard could be another lie from the Order.
What if the Order is trying to turn us against each other?
Scarlet Velvet:
Regardless of the bigger picture, your side ended the deal. We were informed on short notice to stop all trade.
Scarlet Velvet:
And it's not just the Terminals—no more "jewelry," "perfumes," and all that nonsense. You saw what happened today.
Scarlet Velvet:
Not to mention I haven't seen a Montelli for nearly two weeks.
Scarlet Velvet:
Where were you when we were fighting against the Order and the Fisalias?
Montelli has been dealing with its own troubles lately.
Carlotta:
There was a slight issue of a traitor in the vault, so our hands were tied.
You sure don't beat around the bush.
Carlotta:
A direct approach works best at times. Actually, what that Acolyte claimed is news to me. Surrendering control and ceasing trade... are not in the Montelli's vocabulary.
Carlotta:
The Montelli creed has always been family first, and a pioneering spirit second.
Scarlet Velvet:
With your grandfather, maybe, but he won't be around forever. When Capollo takes the helm... you won't have a say.
Scarlet Velvet:
The real question is whether we can get our trade back on track. Can your family still be trusted? What I need is a solid promise from someone in charge—can you do that?
Scarlet Velvet:
One thing's for sure, I don't want to see the family who first broke the monopoly to trade with us commoners end up defending it.
Carlotta:
I'll speak with my uncle and grandfather to see what happened with our cooperation.
Scarlet Velvet:
You know what? This is supposed to be your family's business. Why am I saying this to you... Excuse my earlier words.
Scarlet Velvet:
So... Ernesto told me Benett's gone. What happened? He seemed fine the last time we met.
Some say he got what he deserved for stealing from the vault.
And there are rumors that you helped him fence the stolen items.
Of course, we think there's more to the story.
Scarlet Velvet:
Good judgment there! The rumors are nonsense… Fencing stolen goods? Please. Benett used to handle our shipments for the vault, but everything was above board.
Scarlet Velvet:
Nothing shady, okay? He knew his stuff—never took advantage of us, never budged on prices either.
Scarlet Velvet:
For him, it was always business first, friendship second. When he was running late, he'd stay up that hill sometimes. We even set up a shelter there after it happened a few times. That's all.
Scarlet Velvet:
Come to think of it, he did stay there for a while the last time we saw him. Asked us to stash something too. What was it he said… "Hope we don't need to use it."
(So Benett left something behind on purpose...)
Carlotta:
It seems Benett may have anticipated the trouble ahead.
Carlotta:
I wonder if you might show us to the shelter? We'd be most grateful.
Scarlet Velvet:
There's an entrance along the coast. Go straight down the road and you will see it. What's your business there, anyway?
To test our hypothesis and see if there's anything of importance hidden.

Carlotta:
You can tell someone was here, look at the mess. Perhaps Benett deliberately arranged it this way as a cover.
Carlotta:
We'll each use our sensors to search, then let's gather and analyze the clues we find.

You notice a slightly faded oil painting. The woman in it wears a serene and enigmatic smile.
As you look closer, you see the pencil marks of the letters "ML" and "CL" in the woman's eyes.

You come across a tattered book. As you flip through it, nothing seems out of place.
Maybe this is what Benett left. You decide to take the book and inspect it later with Carlotta.

You spot a small, delicate rotor device, but you have no idea how to open it.
You decide to take the device and inspect it later with Carlotta.

Deciphering the wine code, you and Carlotta piece together the cryptic message Benett sent on the night of his death. The message points to a collection requiring the highest level of authority in the vault. At the same time, you also receive good news from Duncan—he successfully retrieved Benett's Terminal, though it is severely damaged and requires repair. A chilling possibility begins to form in Carlotta's mind: all the suspicious details seem to be pointing to Capollo. To uncover the true traitor, you need to return to Montelli headquarters, repair the terminal, and locate the collection indicated by Benett.
You share the clues and items you found with Carlotta.
Carlotta:
...Something is strange here.
Player:
These items aren't exactly rare, but they're not everyday objects either. They seem out of place here. Looks like Benett left them deliberately.
Carlotta:
Indeed. But what I find strange is... these items, don't they seem familiar?
Carlotta:
Do you recall those three lines from the anthology? The ones Benett sent to me in the photo?
There seems to be a connection here.
Carlotta:
"Thy eyes guide my course in the tempest," the woman in the painting here seems to stand in the gloomy rain, but her eyes remain bright.
This line refers to the letters ML and CL in the eyes.
Carlotta:
Like the secret "code" in drinks, what matters is never the objects themselves, but the shared rules and agreements between both parties.
Carlotta:
Now, the book. It appears to be about winter, which is likely related to the second line, forty winters...
Forty winters... try page 40.
You flip the book to page forty, and there, written in large numbers, are 1, 9, and 0.
Carlotta:
The last one is a rotor device, the planet...
Revolves right twice and a half.
You and Carlotta rotate the device two and a half times to the right. With a click, a slip of paper pops out, showing numbers 4, 6, and 8.
Carlotta:
MLCL190468? That format—It's a vault storage code.
Carlotta:
Of course it is. Benett was a vault keeper. But what was he trying to convey in such a cryptic manner?
Carlotta:
Four letters... the highest clearance level in the vault. Could it be...
Carlotta:
Hold on.
Duncan:
Carlotta? Uh... you asked me to keep an eye out for Benett's Terminal. Well, I've found it.
Amazing. Where did you find it?
Duncan:
That's for me to know and you to wonder.
Duncan:
But... it was not in good shape after what it went through. If you can use it at all, the data and records inside might need to be recovered.
Carlotta:
Understood. I'll have someone pick it up for restoration.
Duncan:
Wait, wait... n-now? You're not even... gonna check?
Why are you stuttering?
Isn't it a good thing that we've found the Terminal?
Duncan:
Oh, it's nothing, really. Just worried it might be too tricky to repair.
Carlotta:
Alright, we'll inform you when there's more to share.
What now, shall we go get that Terminal?
Or see what item the code represents?
Carlotta:
We're returning to the Montelli Quarter first. The Terminal will be fixed there. As for the codes, we'll figure it out once we arrive...
Carlotta:
Player, you might not know this, but Benett was never granted the highest clearance in the vault.
Player:
Isn't that a good sign? It means Benett might not be guilty after all, just as you suspected.
Carlotta:
But it's replaced by another suspicion, one I am reluctant to entertain but am... forced to consider.
Carlotta:
Only Grandfather, Uncle, and I have the highest clearance.
Carlotta:
Liberty Square, our proximity, the vault's security clearance, a traitor among the top brass... the indifference toward the stolen goods, and the authority to end dealings with Scarlet Velvet...
Carlotta:
There's someone all evidence points to... Were I to entertain it... it all starts to makes sense. Uncle...
Carlotta:
But if it was truly him—the heir to our family—who betrayed us, wouldn't that be utterly absurd?
Carlotta:
Now, all that remains is to see what the code reveals. It might clear our doubts... or confirm it.
There's only one way to find out.
Whether it will clear our doubts or confirm it...
Player:
I'll be with you no matter what. So let's see where this leads.

Carlotta:
My people just reported some initial progress on the Terminal repair.
Carlotta:
Let's go. Our meet-up spot is right up ahead.

Benett's Terminal is severely damaged, so only basic data are restored. The recovered data shows Benett's movements, and you notice two suspicious coordinates: one points to the Liberty Square that Carlotta previously investigated, and the other is Capollo's private dock.
Carlotta's Agent:
Lady Carlotta, we received a Terminal addressed to you, signed "DC."
("DC"... It's from Duncan.)
Carlotta's Agent:
The initial restoration is almost complete, but some data is overwritten or isolated due to the extensive damage... We were only able to recover certain sections.
Carlotta's Agent:
Our evaluation suggests that a full restoration might not be worth it. But if you insist, Mr. Pierre at the headquarters is an expert in this field.
Carlotta:
Good, make sure to contact him. Now, please project the restored sections.
Carlotta's Agent:
Absolutely, one moment.
Carlotta's agent takes out the damaged Terminal and projects the restored data before she leaves.
As you and Carlotta review the projected data, you notice a pattern of movements between Margherita's, Benett's home, and the vault with only two deviations—Liberty Square and a dock.
Liberty Square... I was there not long ago.
Carlotta:
Yes, that's where I was investigating that night. Seems like the intel was right—Benett did go there.
Carlotta:
And the other location... I think it's my uncle's private dock, primarily used for storage, not shipments.
Capollo again? That does sound fishy.
Should we head over after this?
Carlotta:
Hmm, reviewing the records hardly proves the connections between these locations.
Carlotta:
If time permits, we should take the Terminal to Mr. Pierre. He is an old friend of Grandfather's, and is an expert in this field.
Carlotta:
There may be other useful information in the Terminal.
Carlotta:
But first, let's put that code to use. It could help us narrow down the range and provide better clues.
Carlotta:
Follow me. This is why I suggested we return here. Our vault holds everything—family property, valuable items for trade, and prized possessions entrusted to us by clients...
Carlotta:
...The complete inventory and access records can only be found here, accessible to those with the proper clearance.

The collection the message points to turns out to be the family's custom-made Reserved Terminal, and all clues suggest that Capollo was the one who removed the core data module from the Terminal, and Benett was framed for embezzlement. During communication, Carlotta rejects Capollo's proposal to move past the matter, unable to ignore Benett's death and the hidden threats within the family. Time is pressing, so Carlotta quickly decides to split up, with you taking Benett's Terminal to an expert named Pierre for a thorough repair, while she heads to Capollo's private dock to find out more clues or retrieve the missing core data module.
Carlotta:
Someone extracted the core data module... It's empty now.
Carlotta:
This must be what Benett was trying to tell us before he died. Someone with access to the vault has broken their oath and leaked the data module. Now, only Uncle, Grandfather, and I have the clearance to retrieve it.
So that clears up all the questions.
I see. But what can he gain from it?
Carlotta:
In Rinascita, the Order maintains control over Terminals, unlike other countries where they are freely traded. My grandfather learned to modify them during his early ventures in the New Federation.
Carlotta:
Our lantern-type Terminal is a modified model. It may look purely ornamental, but it houses the tech modules we've developed. As Scarlet Velvet said, aside from our art dealings, we've been supplying these Terminals to Resonators at fair prices as part of our discreet business.
Carlotta:
By doing so, we've broken the Order's monopoly. We've given more people the means to protect themselves in their ventures, giving them choices they didn't have before.
Carlotta:
The Order is aware of our discreet business, but they turn a blind eye as long as we don't openly challenge their authority. The hefty taxes we pay maintain this... delicate understanding.
Carlotta:
As a result, no family member would ever divulge our Terminal secrets, much less allow the modules to fall into the wrong hands. What exactly are you planning, Uncle?
Carlotta:
No, we must find the core module...
Capollo:
Carlotta, where are you?
Carlotta:
...
Carlotta:
Uncle, may I ask you something first? Before the Carnevale, the Priest showed me your pendant. How did he come by it, and what led to your capture?
Capollo:
Does it matter? All you need to know is that it's handled, and I'm in the clear now.
Carlotta:
Were you mistreated? Did they coerce you into doing something against your will?
Capollo:
Heed my words. Whatever you've uncovered, put it behind you, and all will be as it was. No grudges, no consequences, only family.
Capollo:
Now, we've had some trouble with a shipment over at Septimont. As the rightful heir, I'm giving you a new order. Take care of it, and I'll pretend none of this ever happened.
Carlotta:
I refuse.
Capollo:
Excuse me?
Carlotta:
I said I refuse! I can't act as if nothing happened. I won't let a family member die unjustly, or see our modules fall into the wrong hands.
Capollo:
Don't trouble yourself with the module. Yes, our family's ambition has led us far, but it's exacted a price paid in blood and tears. What harm is there in choosing the safer, easier path?
Carlotta:
I can't believe you just said that. So, you're refusing to tell the truth and reveal the module's location, is that it?
Capollo:
Why do you insist on tearing everything apart? Have you ever thought about what Padrino would say? What others will think of us? I've given you an out, all you need to do is accept it.
Carlotta:
Then so be it.
Carlotta:
Your course is set. As is mine. But mark my words... I will stop you, Mr. Capollo.
Carlotta:
I'm sorry you have to see this side of our family.
It's okay to be a little less perfect with friends.
It's messy, but still manageable.
Carlotta:
Really? I just wish... No, I did promise I'd try to drop the pretense with you.
Carlotta:
I may need more time to come to terms with all this. I don't regret uncovering the truth and exposing the traitor… I'm just saddened that my uncle is the one behind it all.
Carlotta:
We were meant to be the guardians of our family's ideals, to carry the torch forward. And yet, now…
Carlotta:
Well, wallowing in emotion won't solve anything. Our priority now is to recover the data module. Every moment it's missing puts our family at greater risk.
Carlotta:
The core module is difficult to carry around. They must have hidden it... The dock Benett visited, used for storage... Could it be there?
Carlotta:
We need to adjust our strategy. My conversation with Capollo will have alerted him. He's likely to move the module sooner than expected. I need to inspect the dock for any clues.
We may restore more data in this Terminal.
There could still be other possibilities.
Carlotta:
Indeed, but time is not on our side. If Capollo acts on this, I might lose my window to secure the module. Our sole advantage now is that we're operating as a pair.
Carlotta:
I need you to take this terminal to Pierre at the bank. If the dock turns out to be a dead end, we will need other leads.
What's your next move if we find the module?
Carlotta:
I know that securing the module alone won't suffice. I must uncover Capollo's true motives...how it will affect our family. I'll figure it out, I promise.
According to the plan, you and Carlotta part ways. She heads alone to the dock she mentioned.

Carlotta:
They call it a dock, but no ships ever come. Uncle has concealed what he took from the vault here—a secluded place entirely under his control.
Carlotta:
For a secret trove of such value, the lack of security is strange. There was little resistance on my way here. This can't be right.
Carlotta:
Wait, I sense an energy fluctuation nearby... Time to investigate. The size of this place is manageable. I should be able to trace the source quickly.

You track the energy fluctuation, sifting through the gaps between stashed goods and looking for its source.
A storage box catches your eye. Inside, a stunning handicraft adorned with jewels sits in stillness. It's exquisite, but not what you seek.

You trace the energy fluctuation to the piled goods and start looking for its source.
On the left, a delicate aroma of wine fills the air as you spot bottles of golden osmanthus wine. To the right, carefully folded custom-made clothes catch your eye with their luxurious fabrics.
But none of them are the data module you seek, nor do they seem connected to the mysterious energy fluctuation.

Carlotta arrives at the dock as planned. Following a strange energy fluctuation, she finds a stained-glass mirror buried under cargo. At that moment, a hand adorned with a blue-black ornament suddenly reaches out from the mirror, pulling her inside—the coordinates are a trap in disguise.
Carlotta:
(Nothing so far... Was I wrong? Maybe this place doesn't hold what we were looking for? Why did Benett come here, then?)
Carlotta:
(Or am I too late... Did Capollo get here first?)
Carlotta:
(And the energy fluctuation... it was going off and on... No, I couldn't have been imagining it.)
Carlotta:
(Such a big mirror... Why is it here?)
Carlotta:
(It doesn't seem to be made of common glass, but some kind of crystallized energy... Oh.)
Carlotta:
(Will I find the data module on the other side...)
Carlotta:
(Or was all this just a trap...)
You arrive at the bank as Carlotta said, looking for the expert in Terminal studies named Pierre.

Standing beside Pierre is the elderly man you once saw admiring the painting—Francesco, the current head of the Montelli family, also known as ""Padrino."" His words are not just about the painting but also about Carlotta. Rather than relying on his own plan, he hopes that Carlotta and her companions can offer their own solution. Then he entrusts you with a crucial item to be given to her at the right time. After fully restoring the Terminal, you uncover hidden data—it turns out that Capollo deliberately handed this Terminal to Duncan to lure Carlotta into the trap at the dock. With Carlotta now missing, you must rush to the location to save her.
Old Gentleman:
Hello again.
Hello again, Carlotta's grandfather.
You must be Francesco, the current head of the Montelli family.
Should I call you Padrino like the rest do?
Francesco:
You don't seem very surprised to learn who I am.
Player:
Carlotta told me Mr. Pierre always follows her grandfather around. My instincts weren't wrong when I saw you together.
Player:
It also explains why you seemed familiar when we first met.
Was our previous meeting really a coincidence?
Francesco:
What's the term for it... A destined encounter? The universe brought us together, and I happened to take the initiative. It's almost poetic, wouldn't you agree?
Francesco:
That's it, I doubt you want more chit-chat. I know you're here for that Terminal.
Francesco:
Let Pierre inspect it for you and we can resume our conversation.
You knew I was coming.
And you knew why I'm here.
Francesco:
Remember that painting we discussed earlier?
Francesco:
In a fragile equilibrium, the smaller piece is forced to repress its true nature. It's confined to a seemingly flawless structure, stripped of its autonomy. I don't want the same fate for her.
Francesco:
But I can't simply impose my path upon her, expecting blind obedience. She must find her own path, with a partner she can fully trust.
Francesco:
As for those who betray their own blood, there will be no leniency. Even my own son is not exempt from this.
Francesco:
However, before I intervene, I want to see her plan take shape. My hand should only be played as a final measure.
Francesco:
The old give way to the new, that is the way of the world. But for us Montellis, the courage to break from the past matters far more than clinging to it.
Francesco:
So, I ask you this favor. When the time is right, give this to her. She will need it.
Pierre:
It's a little tricky... but you're lucky to have my expertise!
Pierre:
This Terminal is defunct, but I've retrieved all its data, even the overwritten and isolated bits.
You mean, data was erased from it?
Pierre:
The Terminal has been tampered with, but nothing was intentionally erased. It seems they wanted to overwrite the data to avoid detection.
Pierre:
I can show you. Do you have a Terminal? I'll send over the data so you can see for yourself.
These records...
Capollo:
I assume you've taken care of Benett's body?
Capollo's Agent:
We... dumped him in the Tacet Discord zone overnight. We'll claim he was killed by those monsters tomorrow morning.
Capollo's Agent:
Sir... are you sure? Are we really going to work with the Order... after they made you kill one of our own?
Capollo:
We're in too deep now. Handing over the data module to the Order will cement out position as an ally of the authorities. We'll replace the Fisalias! The other Resonators in the city are irrelevant.
Capollo:
And Benett... I would have taken care of him regardless.
Capollo:
He knew too much. He deserved it for pursuing the Scarlet Velvet matter. Anyone who gets in my way shall meet the same fate.
Capollo's Agent:
Y-Yes, sir...
Capollo:
We all stood together on that stormy night, each one of us losing someone dear. And we all share the desire for our family to find an easier path forward.
Capollo:
The best way to avoid sacrifice isn't fighting, but aligning ourselves with superior powers and knowing when to yield.
Capollo:
You may have left the family, and I should expect no more favors from you. But I ask this of you one last time. Please, put this Terminal in Carlotta's hands.
Duncan:
What's in it? Carlotta.. What will happen to her?
Capollo:
Nothing, save for the standard location tracking data every Terminal holds.
Capollo:
In three days, I'll be negotiating on behalf of the family with the Order. I just want to make sure Carlotta doesn't interfere in the meantime. She'll be given a chance to join our side, I promise.
Capollo:
Think about Benett. If you take care of this, I will overlook what he stole and let it be a thing of the past. I know you care more about your late friend than you're willing to admit.
Capollo's Agent:
Unbelievable. What is Capollo even thinking? Killing one of our own... It's a complete betrayal of our family! I must record all this madness with something...
Capollo's Agent:
My Terminal? No, it's too risky. Wait... I have Benett's body... Nobody's going to pay attention to a dead man's Terminal.
Capollo's Agent:
I'll record it, then overwrite with new data.... I have to keep this record well... In case I also...
That Terminal... It was part of Capollo's schemes!
They set a trap in the docks...
Carlotta... Tsk, I can't reach her now.
I must go check on her immediately.
Pierre:
A trap? Wait, sir... Wouldn't Lady Carlotta be in danger? I don't think that is part of your plan. Are you really letting her face this by herself?
Francesco:
She's already there, so why bother? I trust Carlotta and our esteemed guest. It is a trap, but also an opportunity for her to mature.

It would be unwise to directly confront the Order, but staying passively behind Capollo and aimlessly searching for the core data module isn't a reasonable choice either. You and Carlotta decide to force Capollo into handing over the item by giving them an unforgettable response in two days.
You tell Carlotta what you learned from the recovered Terminal data.
Carlotta:
I see... so Duncan was in the dark about the real cause of Benett's death. He simply wanted to protect his friend's reputation, and Capollo used that.
Carlotta:
Duncan gave us a rigged Terminal to cover Benett's "debt", clearing his name.
Carlotta:
Capollo couldn't have tampered with the Terminal data himself, or he would have found the information hidden beneath the overwrites. He simply laid a trap at the dock that Benett visited.
Carlotta:
I can empathize with Duncan, even to some extent Capollo. They are driven by a desire for safety and stability—a tempting future even for me.
Carlotta:
But we will never achieve that by surrendering ourselves to the Order.
Carlotta:
From the very beginning, our paths diverged. To yield to them now means giving up even more, and once we lose our grip, we'll no longer have the luxury of refusal.
Carlotta:
Grandfather and the others have already paved the way. I will follow their lead and chart a course towards a brighter tomorrow. For our family, and all of Ragunna.
Carlotta:
Wealth and power will safeguard our freedom, while freedom, in turn, will nurture wealth and power.
Carlotta:
The Montelli family is set to break the Order's suffocating hold and lead Ragunna towards a wider horizon—embracing Septimont, Huanglong, and other countries. And through it all, we will never forget who we are.
Carlotta:
The family exists to accomplish what one cannot and withstand the winds of fate. This is the future I envision for the Montellis.
What do you plan to do next?
Carlotta:
Like I said, we seize control.
Carlotta:
An all-out war with the Order isn't a wise move. Rather than blindly tailing Capollo in search of a hidden data module, let's take control and have him come to us.
Carlotta:
Scarlet Velvet mentioned they need a formal reply, and we can deliver that.
Carlotta:
Player, care to help me give them an unforgettable response in two days?
We're taking the initiative. I like it.
Have him come to us... That makes things interesting.

Carlotta:
Ahem. Can you hear me?
Carlotta:
Just checking your location, have you reached the spot, my clever accomplice?
Everything's going according to plan.
Carlotta:
Perfect. Remember to be stealthy. Scarlet Velvet and my operatives are positioned in all the streets around the venue. Should anything go awry, I'll set Plan B in motion.
Carlotta:
The venue only has one entrance. I've arranged for a handler to get you in. You'll go in first and then help me slip in without drawing attention.

With the help of a mysterious figure, you disguise yourself as a family member delivering a gift for Capollo and successfully escort Carlotta into the venue.
Bourbon:
The upstairs parlor is off-limits, reserved for a private event.
We gave you the heads-up before.
Boss wanted a batch of gifts for our business partner.
Bourbon:
Hmm... Now that you mentioned it, yes, they did tell me about that. But weren't you supposed to arrive half an hour later?
Half an hour is enough for me.
Bourbon:
What was that?
Oh, I mean, I thought it was good to come here half an hour early.
We can get ready sooner this way.
Bourbon:
You do have a point, but it's a special day. I need to confirm everyone's identity. What's your codename? Show me your token.
(A token?... Tsk, I don't have one.)
(Where's the promised handler? He should be here by now...)
???:
Hey, Tulip! Why are you still standing there? Come here! Boss just asked for you.
The visitor slyly palms a Tulip coin, hiding the gesture in his shadow. You discreetly accept it and present it as proof of identity.
Bourbon:
Ah, Tulip coin... Oh! I remember you. You work at the vault, don't you? We had a drink at Margherita's.
Huh? Uh, well... Yes, it's been awhile!
Don't tell me you've already forgotten me?
Bourbon:
No wonder you arrived early. You people at the vault are always one step ahead.
???:
Yeah, yeah, we can talk after getting the job done. Now hurry up, we'll deliver the gifts together.

Carlotta:
Scarlet Velvet's people have secured Duncan and will bring him to a safe house. He'll return after everything's settled.
Carlotta:
Regarding the Order, I tasked "Blue Rain" and "Retriever" to pose as Capollo's agents and declare the cooperation null and void.
Carlotta:
No data module, no explanation or any follow-up... Capollo is already a lost cause. The Order will realize this soon enough.

As the evening rain falls, washing away everything from the past, Carlotta tells you that today's rain brings her peace. She has finally found her true self and feels in control of both her present and future. When the rain stops, Carlotta bids you farewell. To build a new, true Montelli, she needs to handle the aftermath of Capollo's betrayal. Before parting, she hands you a Cat's Eye brooch, telling you that the codename "Cat's Eye" will forever belong to you, as you are the only member she has ever recommended.
Carlotta:
The rain's back. I remember telling Grandfather how I hated the rainy season.
Carlotta:
I once saw rain as a bad omen in Ragunna.
Carlotta:
When it rains, it's easier to wash away blood stains. That's why acts of revenge usually happen on such days.
Carlotta:
But today's rain feels different. As it falls, the troubles of yesterday are washed away. I feel calm, like I've found my true self again. My present and my future are now in my own hands.
Francesco:
Well done, Carlotta. And thank you, Player.
Francesco:
My girl could not have accomplished this without your assistance.
She personally invited and vouched for me, after all.
She is capable enough in her own right.
Francesco:
I had faith in you two, but you surpassed my expectations.
Francesco:
It appears I underestimated the potential that you possess when working together.
Carlotta:
What he just said... Looks like someone has been keeping secrets from me, huh?
Carlotta:
I've been curious, you entered that Sonoro and delivered his gun to me. How did you earn my grandfather's trust so soon?
That's a story between the two of us.
I'll tell you next time.
Carlotta:
Hm, the nerve... Fine, since we make such a good team, I'll let it slide for now.
Francesco:
Capollo and his lackeys will face the consequences of their actions. Our code is simple—vengeance for blood, death for life. No one is exempt.
Francesco:
There's a lot at play here. It will require some effort and a true Montelli at my side to handle it.
Carlotta:
I see. I'll take care of the rest.
Carlotta:
But before that...
Are you leaving?
Carlotta:
Yes. What, miss me already?
Of course not.
Yes, I'll miss you. Who knows when I'll see you again.
Well... maybe a little.
Carlotta:
"No need to feel sad about parting, for each goodbye brings us closer to the next hello."
Carlotta:
That's my favorite way to think of it—a countdown to our next reunion.
Carlotta:
With Capollo ousted, the family needs someone to fill his shoes. I must assist my grandfather through this tumultuous transition. There is no one else to do it.
Carlotta:
Thank you, Player. As my grandfather said, things couldn't have gone so smoothly without your help and support.
Carlotta:
Now that the dust has settled, you no longer need to stay with me as Cat's Eye of the Montelli family, but still... I want you to have this.
Carlotta:
As I said, every member gets a token that matches their codename.
Carlotta:
Though you already have a pair of Cat's Eyes, please accept this as a token of my appreciation. No, this gem wasn't crafted by my Forte. I chose it just for you.
Carlotta:
I know someone like you won't stay just for me, and joining the Montelli family might not be in your plans just yet.
Carlotta:
But I'll keep this codename for you, Cat's Eye—the first and only member to receive my personal invitation.

What seemed to be an unremarkable ornament blending into the Quarter turns out to play a crucial role. After navigating multiple codes and biometric authentications, a holographic screen finally appears before you.

In the meantime, Carlotta is seeing fragments of her past in a mysterious space.
Frightened Child:
W-what is that...
Dignified Voice:
The family will shield you

Player:
(I'm more entangled in the Montelli family's schemes than I ever realized. When I went after the traitors... No, when I decided to help with the Carnevale, the game was already in play.)

Bartender:
Any recommendations? Isn't the drink you ordered enough for now?
More wine, more secrets.
I'm a fan of good alcohol. Bring me more!
Well, I was just asking...
Bartender:
Ha, well, whether you're indulging in your desires or giving in to them, I'm here for both.
Bartender:
We've got a menu on the table for newcomers. Maybe you'll find something that catches your eye, or you'd prefer to find someone who shares your taste for a Scarlet Velvet Ribbon first. What do you think?

Carlotta:
It's so quiet here... It seems like nobody has set foot in here ever since Benett left.
Carlotta:
Stay vigilant, Player. We're in the wilderness, and anything could happen while we investigate. Promise me you'll take care—I don't want to have to worry about you.

Enzo:
I still remember the last time I saw him. It was raining, heavily. He gave me his only umbrella with that bright, reassuring smile, told me he was fine, then walked straight into the downpour...
Enzo:
Had he already started stealing the goods and secretly selling them for money then?
Adriana:
Was it really worth it? To betray the family... for money? Was it so tempting that he could abandon the vows he swore and the values he held?
Adriana:
What if... what if there's more to it, though? After all, no one's found the stolen goods yet. Maybe he never sold them...
Enzo:
Don't fool yourself, Adriana. This is the result of a full investigation by Mr. Capollo and the higher-ups at the vault. It's as certain as it gets.
Enzo:
Think about all the other traitors we've caught from the vault. Those tuners. Who'd thought they were hiding their true selves until it was too late?
Enzo:
Does it even matter why he betrayed us?

Filiberto:
Something tells me the next head might be someone else.
Emmanuel:
Ha, well, if you're so sure, how about you tell me if we can get that special Margherita pie? I hear they're only making thirty of them today.
Filiberto:
Hey, you should trust my intuition! It's saved me from the reaper more times than I can count!
Filiberto:
But seriously, not long ago they caught another traitor from the vault, and then Benett's betrayal hit... It's no surprise people are starting to question Mr. Capollo's ability to lead. And I heard he hasn't been looking too well lately...
Filiberto:
Meanwhile, Lady Carlotta's reputation has been growing. She's helped a lot of people in the family with her actions and words.
Emmanuel:
True, but you're missing the most important point—the will of Lady Carlotta herself.
Emmanuel:
You know she's never wanted to put her relationship with Mr. Capollo or Padrino at risk. As an adopted member of the family, she's always felt she doesn't deserve a position like that. But, of course, opinions differ on why she's reluctant to take the role.
Emmanuel:
But one thing's clear—Lady Carlotta has no interest in becoming the next head. If she did, the family‘s balance would’ve been disrupted a long time ago.
Emmanuel:
So, for now, just save that intuition of yours for the pie, alright?

Pauline:
If only I were Lady Carlotta! I'd love to have the power to create gems whenever I wanted!
Pauline:
They're so dazzling and mesmerizing. If I were her... actually, just giving me the chance to pick them up would be enough, hehe.
Elisa:
But... don't you know those aren't real gems?
Pauline:
Wait, really? They're not?
Elisa:
Nope. Someone who thought they could make a fortune from those "gems" tried, only to find out that they couldn't even sell them, let alone use them for anything useful.
Elisa:
Those "gems" are actually a medium for deconstruction and reconstruction. They're capable of collapsing and disintegrating the target's frequency they hit before the target vanishes completely.
Elisa:
So they just look like gems. When needed, they can transform into the shape of firearms or bullets.
Pauline:
W-well... what happened to those who actually got their hands on them?
Elisa:
Hard to say. Maybe they ended up as sparkling fragments... Haha.

Duncan:
Benett... where could I dig up more of your secrets?
Duncan:
Oh, it's you. What happened? Need my help?
About that rainy night...
About you and Benett...
What's your plan?
That's it for now.
Ask about something else.
Duncan:
Everyone's got things they'd rather not share. For me, it's that rainy night. Not now, not with you. All I'll say is that the night was bitter cold, and the rain—merciless.
Duncan:
Rain like that reeks of rust. It poured down in torrents, smothering cries for help. Convictions we thought unshakable blurred like ink on waterlogged parchment.
Ask about something else.
Duncan:
Ha, it's just a cheesy story.
Duncan:
Benett and I—we were partners. Missions, mischief, even a dog we shared. We knew each other's families. It's the kind of story you hear about anyone who's faced life and death together.
Duncan:
If our roles were reversed, he'd have done the same for me without a second thought.
Ask about something else.
Duncan:
I'm old, but I've still got a few strings to pull.
Duncan:
Whether it's a casual contact from years ago or the family's next head, I've got to try my luck.
Ask about something else.

Scarlet Velvet:
Whether you want to look around or head to that shelter, the choice is yours.

Carlotta:
Have you made it inside?
Carlotta:
This area is under surveillance. On either side of the main stage, you should see something that looks like a control panel.
Carlotta:
Operate it to disable the cameras, then place the "gems" I made with my Forte into position.

Carlotta:
How did it go? Any issues?
Player:
Everything's fine. Just got to the place we agreed on.

Player:
The front of the hall. Done.

Player:
Main hall, five o'clock. Done.

Player:
Blind spot, done.

Player:
Back window, done.

Player:
The setup is complete, and the time we planned is drawing near.
Player:
How's it going on your end?
Carlotta:
I'm out of the mirror, and the jammer's set up. Capollo actually inspired this plan, otherwise we wouldn't have been able to infiltrate.
Carlotta:
The Order's agents have taken the bait and are at the location. "Blue Rain" and "Retriever" are primed for action.
Carlotta:
We'll head out at the chime of the hour.

Capollo:
Nearly go time. The Order's men should be here.
Capollo:
Double-check everything.
Carlotta:
We should talk, Capollo.
Capollo:
You? Why are you here?!

Trust built on deception will eventually be shattered by reality. You, Carlotta, and Duncan, who decided to help you, change the location and time of the deal without Capollo noticing. Even though both the trading partners and cargo are lost, Capollo refuses to back down. The two Montellis, now on different paths, finally arrive at their confrontation. The key to winning this duel lies in the whereabouts of the core data module.
Carlotta:
Your guests won't be showing up today.
Capollo:
Ha, Carlotta… Looks like you've pieced together the whole story. So it was your crew who tipped us off about changing the time and place for the deal yesterday.
Capollo:
Let me guess. You fed the same line to the Order, didn't you? Playing both sides, setting yourself up nicely… But something doesn't add up. You couldn't have pulled this off alone.
Carlotta:
Capollo's promises of safety and comfort are nothing but a sham. He has been using our family as pawns, making them pay the ultimate price. Benett was just one of his victims.
Carlotta:
He didn't fall at the hands of Tacet Discords but to Capollo himself. His body was disposed of outside the city's limits... The truth is, Benett never betrayed us.
Carlotta:
The path of the Montelli family is one of unity. We stand together, leaving no one behind.
Carlotta:
I can't promise there won't be more losses, but I will prioritize the welfare of every member. I do not take sacrifice lightly.
Carlotta:
Now, will you continue down this path? Or will you align with our cause for Bennett's sake and your own?
Duncan:
Trust built on deception always comes back to haunt you. You're getting what you deserve.
Carlotta:
Now that you've lost both the goods and your trading partners… this is your last chance to bow out gracefully.
Capollo:
Bow out gracefully? Do you think I still care about saving face at this point?
Capollo:
My only regret is not being ruthless enough… I should've cut you loose earlier, making you pay the price like the others who crossed me.
You've betrayed your family's ideals.
Capollo:
And what of it? You'll never understand!
Capollo:
We lack the power to protect everyone, so what's wrong with seeking a powerful ally? Why not align ourselves with those who share my true goal?
Capollo:
…You're right, I've crossed a line. But I can still salvage this if I take you out here and reclaim that data module.

Capollo:
Everyone, capture them!
Carlotta:
Time to leave.
Player:
Copy.
Carlotta:
Fall for me, will you?
Carlotta:
Then let's fall together!

Actor No. 1:
But why... why would Bennett betray us?
Actor No. 2:
Maybe, because he was in charge of the vault. Another soul lost to the greed for money...

Actor No. 1:
If Padrino steps down, do you think Mr. Capollo will be our next head? What's your take?
Actor No. 2:
Well, I thought that was already settled, isn't it? Why bring it up now?

Actor No. 1:
Do you think someone will find out what we're doing?
Actor No. 2:
That's the sixth time you've asked in three minutes. Just breathe and calm down. No one's going to find out.

Actor No. 1:
It's almost time, but why did the Order suddenly change the location and schedule?
Actor No. 2:
This isn't just any ordinary deal. The Order is notoriously cautious, always looking over their shoulder. They were probably worried about a leak.

Actor No. 1:
Once this is over, I'm getting myself a new codename.
Actor No. 2:
A new codename? Why? I thought the one you have now suits you.

Scarlet Velvet:
Hey, Player. Good to see you again.
It's been a while.
You're looking cheerful today.
Scarlet Velvet:
Well, I owe that to you and Carlotta. Thanks to your efforts, we've been able to restart our cooperation with the Montelli family, along with others whose ties had been severed.
Scarlet Velvet:
The Reserved Terminal is still a sensitive subject in public, but at least now, people here are free to explore in the wild and gather Echoes as they please.
Scarlet Velvet:
Honestly, I was shocked when Carlotta asked if I'd be interested in joining your plan. I never imagined you'd outmaneuver the Order and strike a deal with Capollo, forcing him to hand over the core data module.
Scarlet Velvet:
But in hindsight, trusting you, Carlotta... and Benett's judgment turned out to be the right decision.
Scarlet Velvet:
Capollo's been removed and dealt with by the family. Carlotta's busy managing the aftermath alongside Padrino while also focusing on charting a new sea route.
A new sea route? Where to?
Looks like Montelli's ambitions are growing.
Scarlet Velvet:
The exact route hasn't been finalized yet, but it's rumored to span three or four countries.
Scarlet Velvet:
We're still figuring out what ventures to take on and what we truly want to achieve. This time, I'm determined to make the right call too.
Scarlet Velvet:
Player, just sit tight—we'll bring you some good news soon!

Gustavo:
Oh no, look at the time... Sorry, but I've gotta head home for dinner.
Corleone:
Seriously? Come on, don't be a buzzkill. Your mom's not gonna lose it if you eat out just once.
Gustavo:
Maybe not, but she made it clear: no matter what I'm up to, I have to be home for dinner every weekend. If I don't, she'll "break my legs with a spatula and stuff my head into a bowl of spaghetti." Her words, not mine.
Corleone:
By the Sentinel, Gustavo, a Montelli, scared of his mommy! How interesting!
Gustavo:
Hey, watch it! I'm not scared of her—I'm respecting her. Family comes first, always. No matter what.

Returning here once again, you finally understand the deeper meaning that Francesco had not directly stated that day.
"They say in art, we glimpse pieces of our own soul... True artistry lies not only in what is painted, but in what is left unsaid."
Glory in Decay is the name of the painting, as well as the motto this elder man has gifted to himself—he feels honored by his own exit.

Passing by Benett's former residence, you discover a bouquet quietly placed at the door.
Looking at the bouquet, with the signature "DC," you almost instantly realize who is mourning Benett—Duncan, the man who had chosen to leave, yet still returns for his dear friend.
He helped deliver the false message about the schedule and location change to the Order and helped you successfully infiltrate the trading venue... In your and Carlotta's plan, he was an important piece.
Now, for his own safety, he must temporarily leave under Carlotta's arrangement.
But no matter when, no matter in what indentity, as long as he chooses to return, Ragunna and Montelli will always welcome him with open arms.

Tornatore:
"The rain poured relentlessly, cloaking the world in a shroud of gloom, stripping away its pretense of grandeur to reveal its barren core."
Tornatore:
"Under the storm's shadow, people were fighting at each other's throats—fragile yet ferocious, like... like beasts cornered in a cage." No, no, Tornatore, that's far too trite! Think, man! You can craft something better!
Tornatore:
You're the playwright of this drama. Give it an ending that lingers, and echo that won't fade!
Tornatore:
"As she fell, her trembling hand raised the gun. The old acquiantance, a traitor to his ideals, stared down the barrel. One last shot. Addio." Hmm, does that come across too... passive?
Tornatore:
Ah, I see. Rumors, ripe and waiting, a wellspring of inspiration at my fingertips. Let's see... "Can I really trust {Male=him;Female=her}? She wondered. Yet instinct urged her forward. She clasped {Male=his;Female=her} hand firmly, then turned her back, offering it wholly to her new companion." Yes, yes, that has promise!
The creator in front of you is completely consumed by the tale of storm and betrayal he's spinning. Perhaps it's best to let him remain in his trance.

Uneasy Montelli Member:
But… this is the Order we're dealing with, and it's strictly forbidden by Padrino.
Calm Montelli Member:
Exactly, which is why we just need to ensure Padrino doesn't find out. Once the deal's done, it'll all be behind us.
Calm Montelli Member:
Besides, Capollo is Padrino's own son. Following his lead is bound to benefit us in the long run.
Uneasy Montelli Member:
I know, but still…
Calm Montelli Member:
What's the use of worrying now? Everyone involved knew the risks going in.

The Montelli memeber before you is deeply immersed in his work of safeguarding, observing every movement around him. He impatiently waves at you, signaling that he has no time to deal with you.
You decide to check other areas of the trading venue.

The Montelli member before you stares blankly at the entrace. A flicker of hesitation and conflict flashes across his eyes, and his finger unconsciously tap lightly.
It's clear that this Montelli member, caught in his own emotional turmoil, won't give you any further response. You decide to check other areas of the trading venue.

Serious Capollo's Agent:
Stop messing around.
Serious Capollo's Agent:
The deal hasn't started yet. Get back to your post.

Composed Montelli Member:
Why you suddenly want to change your codename? Did you get yourself into trouble?
Depressed Montelli Member:
Trouble? In our line of work, trouble is part of the package. Look at this mess…
Depressed Montelli Member:
*curses* Why is this city such a nightmare? Problems everywhere! Seriously, who cares about the Order or Fisalia?
Depressed Montelli Member:
Anyway, I'm not retiring yet, but I'm burned out. A new codename and a new environment might give me a fresh perspective and keep my passion for my career.
Composed Montelli Member:
Ah, I see. Sounds like someone's having a midlife crisis. By the way, if you're changing your codename, I'll change mine too. Let's make it a team effort.
Depressed Montelli Member:
What?! I'm not having a midlife crisis!
Composed Montelli Member:
Sure, sure. Oh, and I hear Septimont is short on people. Maybe we could...
Composed Montelli Member:
Coming up with new codenames is tough. I'll leave that part to you.

Carlotta:
Here.

Carlotta:
Please follow me.

Carlotta:
Watch out.

Carlotta:
Don't let your guards down.

Carlotta:
Enemies ahead.

Carlotta:
Try this.

Carlotta:
Impressive.

Carlotta:
Nice move.
